Mazda MX5 2008 | Water Leak Found (part 4)

Video transcript

0:00 Right, okay, so we're now going to show you the common fault on the MX5 with the scuttle areas. So what we're going to focus on is I've got my torch down there in the footwell, and what we're going to focus on is this screw here which holds the scuttle area on. Underneath it's got a rubber grommet which that screws into, and they're notorious to foul and then they let water straight through. So what we're going to do is we're going to get our water can, and then I'm going to slowly put water just where that clip is, to making

0:35 sure that none is running in the car. So if we just put loads on that clip there, and then I quickly go on the inside, so we can see that it's dripping from underneath the glove box, or the dashboard sorry, and that would be why that bracket is rusty. And we can see that it's dripping off and it then, and drips into the front foot well.

1:03 So as we can see, it's all wet down here, and it's wet obviously front to back on the driver's side. If we just go around to the passenger side, I don't believe the passenger one's leaking as of yet, but there is signs that possibly it has been leaking. So this one's got a little bit of a cover on it, which won't protect it completely.

1:24 So we'll put some water just down the back of the scuttle area. Okay, and then if we quickly go inside, got my torch up here. Okay, so this side doesn't seem to be leaking as bad as the other side, but if we look up here we can see a telltale sign of where it has been leaking. Oh, there we go, so we just got a tiny little drop there. So it is leaking from both sides, which we did expect, and so that's a case that obviously we're

2:04 gonna have to obviously get them sorted out there. And as far as I can see, it doesn't feel that wet in the front, and we can't lift the carpet up until obviously we start taking bits and pieces out. And so I believe that is everything we found on the MX5.

James shows the leaks from the scuttle area. There are two bolts which have a rubber washer which should seal them waterproof.

However, over time this washer will perish and leak. The water then runs straight through into the driver's compartment and drips onto the cabin.

These washers need to be replaced with new ones, but what's interesting about this video is that it shows the rust. You can see on the passenger side that the bracket is rusted, but the bolt isn't. This because the bolt is a standard zinc coated bolt which is coated against rust, but most of the parts on the inside of the cabin are not coated with even paint as protection. There isn't supposed to be water in the cabin, so why rust-proof them?

The rust on that bracket isn't just because the water is running over it. If you have a leaky car you will notice that in the mornings the windows are steamed up, you find condensation over the cold glass. You don't see that water is condensing on every hard cold surface, this will include all the brass and copper electrical connectors on the wiring loom, switches, and interior lights.

Water can cause a host of problems, including that familiar damp smell that classic convertible cars are known for.

If we do get the go-ahead from the customer to work on this car, we will dry it, it has already been decontaminated. It would also be nice if we could give it a polish and a ceramic coating. A car like this can provide enjoyment for many years to come.
